2 in a row for Spinning Spanner
A busy race-week proved to be a successful one too.
Adelaide Cup Day was the day for Kiss The Cash who has transferred from another stable to be gate-trained. Even though she slightly missed the start, she ran a fantastic race to win the 1100m mares race. You can watch her win click here. She is now spelling.
At the pre-easter race meeting at Oakbank on Saturday 13th March, we saw Scary Smokovec flying down the hill into the straight finishing next to 4 others in a line. He tried hard and ran well to finish 5th, 1 length behind the winner. A good effort for the oldie in a quality class of racing, still bright, happy and competitive!
Tolderol Teaparty also ran on the day, he seemed a bit flat but pulled up ok, so we are currently finding out if he was not well or is just asking for a spell.
The weekend went on with Sunday's race-meeting at Clare Valley on the 14th March.
Kyneton Lad was our first of the day and he was quite unlucky to get beaten by 0.4 length. He had a tough run and we are very happy with his efforts. It was also the first time that this young lad actually raced, he has always tried hard but the penny has dropped, that you don't just run as fast as you can, which is great! You can watch his race click here.
The next race for us was Spinning Spanner, even though he has been showing signs of wanting a spell lately he could beat this field easily. In the 1700m Class 3 he was above his class and not up to far distance yet but he just cantered to the line winning easily. You can watch his race click here.
He will now have a spell to come back bigger and better.
Oriental Sling didn't get every chance on the day as she got beaten to run 3rd. The horse, that won, ran an outstanding race and she only just got beaten to run 2nd.
She has been racing very consistently and we are pleased with her efforts. You can watch her race click here.
The Yearling Sales are over and we have 3 lucky owners of the 2 colts and 1 filly that we sold. Congratulations!

Scary Smokovec, "Oakbank specialist"!
The 9 year-old grey is having the preparation of his life and has shown us again how much he loves that hill and of course the big crowd at Oakbank. Winning by nearly 4 length on easter Monday, 5th April, ridden by Michael Hoppo, he just bolted home to get the trophy for the grey-horsed handicap that he also won 4 years ago combined with a win on the Saturday meeting.
He can watch this fantastic win here.
We also saw 2 good efforts from Oriental Sling and Kyneton Lad
at Clare on easter Saturday.
Both ran into tough competition and did well finishing 2nd and 3rd.
Tolderol Teaparty ran 3rd this Wednesday 14th April at Strathalbyn, got boxed in and just didn't have that "kick" to win. He will well entruly deserve a spell now after a fantastic preperation.
Lady Aspen had a gallop there first up but just got tired and it was worth it as part of her preparation to come back from a long spell.
Kyneton Lad will now have a spell too, he has shown huge improvement in his races so far as well as more maturity and we are sure he will come back much bigger, stronger and even more mature. Certainly a horse to look out for in the future!
We are looking forward to see Scary Smokovec and Oriental Sling in action again at Naracoorte next Thursday, 22nd April, both in best form, with Paul Gatt on board.

Winter break
As the temperatures are down and we just saw on the news, that the last time we had such a long consecutive time of under 5 degrees over night was in the 60's, a few horses are having a break to come back for firmer tracks again.
That means quiet times, not saying we have nothing to do...
Uli Urs Utz has run 6th on a too rough track after having shown an impressive win again at Murray Bridge on the 26th May (his 4th)(for the replay press here). He is now preparing for a race on Saturday the 17th July at Morphettville and is going as good as ever.
Wirribanta ran last Wednesday over 1400m and struggled on the wet ground but ran on nicely the last 100m so he will possibly run next Wednesday at Balaklava and see if a mile would suit better.
We also have Sturgis and Kiss The Cash in work and going well ready for their first jump-outs and trials soon.
Tolderol Teaparty has also returned from a break after his last sensational preparation with 4 wins.
A couple of 2 year-olds are having an early preparation and going nicely. Hotline, a half-brother to Voice Commander and a filly by Real Jester out of Tycus are just naturals and boths absolutely love their work and really want to be racehorses.
The spellers in the paddocks include Scary Smokovec, his yearling- and 2 year-old half sisters that are still up for lease, Oriental Consort and her 2 year-old full sister which is also still available to have shares in. The grass is green, the young ones are growing by the day and the crop to make our own hay is loving the rain and sun.

Sturgis breaks Maiden as first starter
A great first run seen by Sturgis on the 25th August 2010 at Strathalbyn over 1600m cheered everyone up. Race 2 of the day was 17 minutes delayed due to bad weather, before the race meeting was abandoned. We thought the downpour with thunder and lighting just minutes before the race made the track too wet but later we found out the ambulance got bogged. What a reason...
The firststarter bred to perform over longer distances by Generous led all the way and pushed away again up the straight to win by over 5 length. He will be put to the test in tomorrow's 1800m 0-75 CL3 Hcp. We are hoping for a wet track, he has drawn well and is feeling very well.

The number of horses in work is going up daily and things are slowly getting back to normality after a very wet 2 weeks. We are one of the "dryest" (can you call it dry- no!) places which only received 32mm on the wettest day.
Crazy weather all along and it's not finished, more showers forecasted for as far as we can forecast to.
Tolderol Teaparty is on the improve again too soon to be seen in public again and so is Kiss the Cash, just waiting for some dryer tracks. Oriental Consort and Uli Urs Utz have just started again and Varsovia and Bella Regale are looking promising too this prep.
9th December
Varsovia finally breaks maiden at Murray Bridge
After having 8 starts for 6 placings, Varsovia showed everyone how it's done and charged home coming from nowhere to win by 2.3L on Sunday, 5th December at Murray Bridge. You HAVE to watch it!! Click here. We will see her again next Friday at Morphettville.
Uli, Oriental Consort and Tolderol Teaparty will be seen again next Wednesday as well as Bella Regale.
Sturgis had a long preparation and is having a spell now waiting for next winter.
Not saying it's not wet here in summer,
i think everyone has experienced the
unusual weather. Heading towards
X-mas, i must say it doesnt feel like it,
more like autumn than anything else.
We see paddocks going green again
and moving horses in and out of stables
due to wet weather. Strange year, all in all.

Busy summer season with lots of horses coming up
Our racing stable appears quiet to the outside world, but it is all but quiet. Lots of horses in work but not many horses are quite racefit and ready to go apart from Tolderol Teaparty who raced yesterday at Strathalbyn and unfortunately he had an unexpected throat infection and had to pull up. Of course we were all very disappointed as it was going to be his day to win but the good news is that he is ok and will hopefully continue his great efforts still in this preparation.
3 year olds Uschrike and Ilsede have also come back into a work after being broken in and turned out. 2 beautiful fillies by Barely a Moment (a 2 year old and a 3 year old called Sheherezade) and also Uli Urs Utz and his brother Scary Smokovec have resumed work as well as Spinning Spanner and Bell Magic who had a long break.
Greybrow is also back in work after a spell for recovering from shinsoreness.

Quiet winter
Where has most of this year gone? Already in the middle of winter and time seems to fly. Although there is rain, cold and mud at this time of the year it is usually a great time of the year being a little bit quieter than other times. Just the minimal of horses in work, the foals all weaned, all 2 year olds nearly finished to be broken in, it all comes together at this time of the year. Wait another 3 weeks and we will be rumbling again getting horses ready for the wonderful spring racing season.
One horse everyone knows well wouldn't want to miss out on working every day, that's Scary Smokovec.
He always puts in his best and even though he hasn't won for a while, the way he just loves racing, it would be hard to stop him due to age (and with $145,830 prizemoney he truly deserves to keep a spot in work). He ran 4th at Bordertown 2 starts back on a very horribly wet track he didn't like and then ran 5th at Gawler last start, where he gave his favourite jockey Michael Hoppo a great feel. So he's up for a 1200m race at Murray Bridge this Thursday and we are hoping for not so much rain this time around!
One horse to have had a very successful preparation is Greybrow. He has just gone out for a spell after he showed us what he is made of and won 2 out of 9 runs in his first preparation, both wins at Strathalbyn over 1200m. He has shown a bit of a hit and miss career which is fine with us if he needs run inbetween to come out with wins.
Having a spell alongside him is Mr La Rue aka Danny. He has had a big preparation coming from being a green little Bub to being a very competitive racehorse. He is very intelligent and has learned a lot so we are spelling him on a good note even though he hasn't won yet. He ran 2 great races this prep. One of which was a 0-64 1100m race at Strathalbyn. He found himself being the only maiden in the race and beat a couple of city winners to run 3rd which was a great effort. His last run was at Bordertown and he really did everything right linking out and storming home, pity it was only 1100m and he only finished 7th but he tried hard and deserved a spell.
Varsovia and Sturgis are both working nicely and will be seen again next Wednesday at Murray Bridge. Both have had a nice preparation so far with Sturgis still getting fitter and Varsovia just waiting for the right race to settle back and storm home the way she likes it best.
2 two-year-old Newcomers in work now are a Fraar filly nicknamed Dora and her Blevic friend Krafayis. Both have just started working and learning more about being a racehorse after a previous breaker preparation and a good growing-up spell. Both of these horses are still available for lease also.
Speaking of youngsters, we have 2 lovely rising 2 year olds, that are preparing to race as early 2 year olds. A beautiful looking filly by Husson and an outstanding colt by Zeditave are very well behaved and have already got the hang of racing each other. It would be nice to see everything going well with them and of course seeing them on the track.
Tolderol Teaparty (teabag) is now finished after a fantastic career as a racehorse and enjoying life in the paddock at the moment before being my (uschi's) riding horse and getting very spoilt ;-)

Sturgis strikes back
After having some trouble updating this site, I finally got the computer to do what I told it again! And that's not all the good news.
Sturgis finally won his 2nd race and did it so easily too. A wet track at Strathalbyn, a 2050m 0-68 Hcp, it all came together for our wonderful boy on grand-final day, the 1st October (to watch him win, click here). A good day was had by all when it finished off with Collingwood getting beaten (sorry Collingwood-supporters!) by Geelong. Greg was wrapped as his nephew only just got drafted by Geelong last year to play for them in the future. How exciting!
Around the stables, things have certainly picked up again and spring season is a great time to train horses. Greybrow and Mr La Rue (aka Danny) are back in work and will be ready to trial and race again soon. Uli Urs Utz is looking for a come back even though we are giving him a bit more time to get fit again this time around. Varsovia has struck some bad luck in her races. Not only bad weather and wet tracks stopped her, but a horse crashing into her after the jump out of the gates has really taken her enthusiam. Now we will give her a bit of a freshen up and see if this outstanding little mare will get to show us how good she really is. We al know it from training her how talented she is but she just seems to attract bad luck in her racing career.
Our big lad, a 2-year-old colt by Zedative is coming along very nicely and is
looking at jumping out this week, which will be very exciting! 3 other untried
3-year-olds, Flash Moment, Sheherezade and Krafayis are also heading that
way and hopefully if everything goes its way they will be seen at the track
very soon also.
Greg is delighted to hear our 2 horses, that we sent to Macau to race are both
going fantastic and 3-year-old colt Billingsgate is a real stunner. He ran 2nd
and won his first 2 starts over there and Greg is really looking forward to travel
over there to see him race next!
3 mares Tycus, Oriental Queen and Solicitous are still pregnant and we will
have 3 late foals this year, really looking forward to that again of course.

A great start to summer with a double at Bordertown
Summer is here and keeping us busy, but it is also bringing joy.
Yesterday, Greg scored winning the prize for the best trainer of the day infront of the crowd at the Bordertown Cup day. Rider of our double Simon Price was excited to start with a great win on Mr La Rue and finish the day bringing home the money on Uli Urs Utz who is finally back to the old self after a few health issues.
To watch Mr La Rue win click here. If you would like to see Uli's comeback click here.
Both horses pulled up fantastic and Uli Urs Utz is very proud and happy this morning and will certainly improve on his fitness with the run too whereas Mr La Rue is fit as a flea.
Both had to toughen it out a bit and both put in every bit they had!
Foaling season was reasonably quiet this year and we are only home to 2 new foals this year, bith of which were very late November foals. Tycus had a beautiful dark bay filly by Golden Lake and Oriental Queen surprised us 2 days later in the morning and let us watch her give birth to a wonderful looking filly by Golden Lake also. What a special moment! Both foals are very healthy and going well.
Another bit of excitement was drawn by the hay season this year. For a change and trial, we have decided to go with roundbales instead of small squares this year and we have to say- how easy! It all happened literally overnight with the hay being baled at 7pm right through to 1am and carted into the shed with a tractor and truck until 5.30am. Even though the shed wasn't the easiest to stack these monster bales into, the job got done and Greg couldn't believe his eyes for another few days that the hay was actually in the shed without having to lift one bale, just go to bed and the next morning your shed is filled up with beautiful nice-smelling haybales!!!
The horses in work are all going very well. We have just had a little campaign to put some of the younger horses in the pool and after the initial excitement and splash, they are all enjoying it- ready for some hot days to come so they can go for a nice cool swim after work.
Our 2-year-old Zedative colt Zednick has had a maginificent campaign and after winning a trial at Strathalbyn, he unfortunately pulled up a little bit shinsore from his trial at Morphettville. A big preparation, that unfortunately didn't quite get him to a race but he is ready as can be for the next time around in a few weeks and hopefully there will be some lovely 2yo races for him. In the meantime, he is enjoying a spell with the other boys out in the paddock to mature and take in what he has learned and experienced so far in his short life.
We also have our 2 2-year-old fillies back in work by Husson and Oratorio. They are growing and developing, well behaved, keen to work and happy to eat and sleep lots, just how you want the kids to be!
Belle's Reward, a 3 year old Bellotto filly out of Phone and her friend, Scary Smokovec's 3 year old half sister by Real Jester nicknamed "Jess" have had a lovely preparation and are showing a bit of ability. They might not get to a race this time around but they are certainly ones to look our for in the future.
Uschrike and Ilsede (Scary's 4 year old sister by Blevic and a 4 year old Blevic- Oriental Queen mare) are back in work and going very well with their fast work. They have taken a while to mature but this time around we should be looking at some success. Not so bad when you think both families are known to take a little bit longer but then pull it off.
And who remembers "Bellona"? We now have her full sister by Bellotto called "Why not you". She has just had her first jump-out and was green but beautifully behaved and showing some good action.
Scary Smokovec is back in work getting ready to win at Oakbank as an 11 year old. He showed us last time it's all just talk about the age when he won at Murray Bridge. He is still passionate about what he is doing so we hope we can do that again to impress his fan-club :-)
Tuscany View has come back over here again but he is hesitating to jump out of the gates with the other horses. Maybe a horse jumped into him and hurt him or something scared him. We are still trying to figure it out. It would be so nice if horses could talk sometimes and just tell you what's the matter and if it was to say he didn't want to be a racehorse any more that would make it a million times easier. He still seems keen to work and gallop so we are still working with him to find a solution to solve whatever is bothering him with the gates.
I have a couple of wonderful pictures for you that I will upload very soon :-)
