Derby Plans For Son Of Encosta de Lago Sire
Story By Brian Russell Media
Tuesday, 14 October 2008: Next April's South Australian Derby has been penciled in for Tuscany View, a gelded son of the Encosta de Lago sire Tuscanos.
Tuscany View finished strongly to be a nose second to the Danehill Dancer product Dual Hemisphere in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes over 1800 metres at Cheltenham Park on Saturday.
It was the longest trip asked of Tuscany View, a winner twice at two, including an event over 1410m on the same track, and the effort suggested he would be able to handle the 2500m of the Derby, a race which has often been a stepping stone to greatness.
First and second in the 2008 Classic were Melbourne Cup hopes Zarita and Zagreb and among earlier winners have been Mummify (first and third in tilts at the Caulfield Cup) and Subzero (won the Melbourne Cup).
A son of a Western Symphony mare and the first stakes money earner produced by any of his first four dams,Tuscany View was bred by Terry and Christine Nevill at their emerging quality Hollylodge Thoroughbreds stud at Avenel in Victoria and sold as a foal with his dam. He is from the second crop of Tuscanos, a resident at Hollylodge with the Danehill importation Honours List, the sire of 2008 Group1 Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honour.
Lightly raced Tuscanos, a son of a Palace Music mare, at two won over 1200m at Flemington and finished second in the VRC Sires' Produce Stakes and Inglis Premier Stakes at two and at three was fourth in the VRC Australian Guineas.
He has had restricted stud opportunity, but with his oldest 4-year-olds has supplied 29 money earners including14 winners. One of the most powerful looking sires at stud in Victoria, the 16.3 hands chestnut Tuscanos stands on a fee of $5,500.
